For a village barely three-quarters of a square mile, Butler's pattern is simple: Hampton Avenue (CTH KK, continuing as CTH EE) carries the east–west movement and West Silver Spring Drive (CTH VV) — the only signed truck route through town — takes the north–south and freight load, both feeding N 124th Street. The one signalized major crossing is Hampton Avenue & N 124th Street; the Hampton Avenue & Hampton Road junction a block west is uncontrolled, the kind of geometry that produces low-speed fender-benders. The other Butler variable is the rail line the village was built around: when a train works the yard, cars stack at the grade crossings until it clears.

Butler's weather hazards are compact, like the village itself — a built-up grid along the Menomonee River where freeze-thaw pavement damage, winter snow and the occasional pocket of river-corridor fog make up most of the driving-hazard list.
